1950 The boundaries for California area codes were moved. 415 was extended northward to the Oregon border and 916 was moved to the northeastern area of the state. Bakersfield was moved to 213 and Sacramento was moved to 916
January 1, 1951 Area code 213 was split, with 714 covering the southern part of the 213 area code to the Mexican border
January 1, 1957 Area code 213 was split, with 805 covering the northern and western areas of 213
January 1, 1984 Area code 213 was split, with 818 covering the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys
november 2, 1991 Area code 213 was split, with 310 covering the southern and western areas of 213
June 13, 1998 Area code 213 was split, with area code 323 becoming a "doughnut" around 213 (central Los Angeles)
July 8, 2017 The 1998 split is erased, effectively making 213 and 323 overlays to each other. The reason: 323 has run out of numbers while 213 has an excess of numbers
